Zimbabwe: "We won't complain"
![]() Darren Gough: "I feel very fit this year"
Zimbabwe announced on Saturday they will not officially complain about two third-umpire decisions which may have caused them concern during the third day of the Lord's Test.
Fast bowler Heath Streak had indicated that the tourists, sliding fast to defeat, would be referring the two decisions to match referee Graham Dowling. First Alec Stewart, on 24, stayed in his crease after captain and wicketkeeper Andy Flower had claimed a low catch behind. Then a low slip catch to Nick Knight off Trevor Gripper was also referred to Holder and Gripper had to go during Zimbabwe's evening collapse in which they tottered to 39 for five under a four-wicket burst from Darren Gough to leave England a massive 293 runs ahead.
Heath, whose return of six for 87 was the best for Zimbabwe in Tests, had said he thought the tourists' management would be going to the match referee regarding those decisions. But Zimbabwe manager Dan Stannard confirmed later: "We have not made an official complaint, nor do we intend to do so." Stewart, meanwhile, believes he has never kept to a quicker Gough, let loose with less than an hour of day three to go. "That's as quick as I've kept to Goughie, those seven overs he bowled," said Stewart. "He got a stiff neck looking at the speedometer and I've got sore hands from taking them. He bowled rapid, it was quality bowling and backed up by Andy Caddick, who's done it for 12 or 18 months. Goughie swung it up the hill."
Gough added: "It was great to get what we did. We were trying to get two wickets and we got five. I feel fit this year, strong, no niggles no injuries, and it always helps. "I started slowly in the winter and got better as I went on and hopefully I can stay fit. "I'm hoping it can go like that every game." Stewart could be forgiven for letting his thoughts drift to Wembley Stadium a few miles away where his beloved Chelsea beat Aston Villa 1-0 to win the FA Cup. Stewart joked: "I was under pressure not to get out at five-to-three to be honest. It was a great day for me, a great day for Darren Gough, a great day for England and a very, very good day for Chelsea. so I can't complain." Streak's name will now go on the honours board in the away dressing room and he said: "Just to play at Lord's and to go up on the bowling board is something. "I felt good bowling from the pavilion end. I've played here three times before and bowled from the other end most times and bowled a lot better. "From the start to the end it was probably one of my memorable bowling spells."
