US refuses to recognise Peru election

The United States government has refused to recognise Sunday's controversial presidential election in Peru, describing it as invalid and a threat to regional stability.

In comments directed at the winner, Alberto Fujimori, the State Department in Washington said no president emerging from such a flawed process could claim legitimacy.

Mr Fujimori was re-elected unopposed for a third term, after his only rival, Alejandro Toledo, boycotted the second round, alleging fraud.

Figures released by the Peruvian electoral authorities showed that about a third of the electorate spoiled their ballot papers.

Mr Fujimori has remained silent since his victory, but members of his government have shrugged off warnings that Peru will face international isolation. Correspondents say the fact that Mr Fujimori has been a key United States ally in fighting drugs could shield him from far-reaching diplomatic sanctions.
