Atomium chiefs snub Adidas offer
![]() Adidas want to transform the 'atoms' into footballs
The management of Belgium's Atomium landmark have turned down an offer from Adidas to give the famous atom-shaped structure a Euro 2000 makeover.
Adidas International had offered 1.8 million Belgian francs (approximately £25,000) to paint the Atomium's globes as footballs for the duration of the finals. But Freddy Thielemans, head of the non-profit organisation that manages the building, said it was not enough and that he was against using the monument for advertising purposes. The final decision on whether or not to go ahead with the paint job will be taken by local politicians, although Thielemans has threatened to resign if his decision is overturned. But Adidas representatives are keen to meet the Atomium management to discuss their proposal further and are still hopeful of getting the go-ahead for the celebratory makeover.
