Fowler hoping to repay Keegan's faith

Robbie Fowler has admitted he is lucky to be in the England squad after missing most of the year with injuries.
But the Liverpool striker, who has undergone two ankle operations and not played a full senior international match since September, aims to prove to the England manager that he is worth a gamble for Euro 2000. "After the kind of season I've had Kevin Keegan has no reason to pick me," Fowler explained. "Hopefully I can prove to him in training before the final 22 gets announced for the tournament that I am fit enough to be selected. Great boost "I'd love to go to Euro 2000 and I wouldn't let anyone down if I did. "This hasn't been a very enjoyable season for me because of the injuries I've had - but I am hoping it can end on a high note.
He added: "It is brilliant that Kevin Keegan has called me into the England squad. It gives me a chance of going to Holland and Belgium, which is a great boost for me." "In a strange kind of way my lack of games could help me because while tiredness may come into play with other players, it isn't a factor with me." Fowler played a full 90 minutes in Ronnie Moran's testimonial match on Tuesday night, and hopes to use that as a springboard to build up his match fitness. "It was good to get a full match under my belt.I know this was only a testimonial game, but I felt sharp and fresh. "I think I showed my fitness was good and I know the goals will come sooner rather than later." |
