Strikes disrupt life in Assam

Strikes called by three tribal groups have caused disruption in the northeast Indian state of Assam.

Officials said schools, banks and businesses were closed in response to the one-day strike call by the Bodos, Karbis and Kamtapuris tribes, who are fighting for separate states.

Road links between the region and the rest of the country were also cut.

The tribes are protesting against the central government's decision to create three new states and not to fulfil their demands.

They said they would fight until their demands were met.

Officials described the situation as tense.
