Freed Moroccan Islamist attends Friday prayers
The Moroccan Islamist leader, Sheikh Abdessalam Yassine, has attended Friday prayers for the first time since his release from house arrest three days ago. Correspondents say his supporters appeared anxious not to provoke any confrontation -- only a handful accompanied him to the Sidi Said Mosque in his home city of Sale. Thousands took to the streets when he was released for a short period five years ago. Mr Yassine was put under house arrest more than ten years ago after calling for the implementation of Sharia law in Morocco From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
