Turkish football triumph
A Turkish club has won a major European football tournament for the first time. Galatasaray from Istanbul won the final of the UEFA Cup, beating the English side, Arsenal from London, on penalties after the match finished goalless after extra time. Their success sparked scenes of wild celebration in Turkey. Thousands of people thronged the centres of major cities, letting off fireworks, dancing and banging drums. There was no trouble at the match itself in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, but police arrested more than forty people during disturbances before and after the game. At least seven people were injured, some of them seriously. The governing body of European football, UEFA, has said it will carry out an inquiry into the planning and preparations for the match.
