Wigan midfielder Darren Sheridan kept the Latics' promotion dream alive hitting the winner to clinch a Wembley date in the Second Division play-off final. The former Barnsley player struck after 61 minutes when his free-kick from just outside the box hit David Livermore and shot past keeper Tony Warner. Millwall dominated the first half but failed to find the finish and Wigan reserve keeper Derek Stillie was in outstanding form with a series of top-quality saves after Wigan had taken the lead. Chance Wigan had a chance to grab a second when Andy Liddell set up Welsh striker Simon Haworth but he curled the shot wide of the right post. Gillingham will meet Wigan in the play-off final after they negotiated their way past nine-man Stoke in the second division play-off final. Goals from Barry Ashby, Iffy Onuora and Paul Smith sent the Gills through to their second successive play-off final. But it was the two dismissals which turned the match. Clive Clarke was the first to see red after throwing the ball - and Stoke's Wembley hopes - away a minute after being booked just before the interval. Emotions Emotions were high as the game threatened to boil over, but neither manager succeeded in calming their players down during the break and Graham Kavanagh then got his marching orders on 50 minutes. Darlington booked themselves a Wembley date in the Third Division play-off final after killing off local rivals Hartlepool in the semi-final second leg at Feethams.
Chris Turner's side had travelled more in hope than in anticipation after the 2-0 reverse at the weekend, with the manager gambling on three men in attack to try and plunder back the deficit. Posh hero However, his tactics backfired, and it took the Quakers less than 10 minutes to end their neighbours' hopes of booking their own tickets for the Twin Towers. David Farrell was the hero as Peterborough eased past Barnet's challenge to secure their first Wembley date for eight years at London Road. The versatile winger rammed home two stunning long-distance strikes and a cheeky chip to complete a stunning hat-trick and take Posh to the Division Three play-off final next Friday. |
