Kenya power cuts 'may get worse'

Reports from Kenya suggest that rationing of power supplies, which is already widespread, could become more severe in future.

Kenyan newspapers say that from next week, homes and businesses in the capital, Nairobi, could be hit by cuts in electricity supply of up to eighteen hours a day, for four days a week.

Rationing came in late last year, as water levels in the country's main dams fell dramatically because of the drought.

A BBC correspondent in Nairobi says that with the failure of last month's long rains, the problem has become a crisis.

She says many Kenyans blame the authorities for a lack of contingency planning.
