Serbian police seize opposition broadcaster
Serbian opposition leaders are meeting in Belgrade to discuss the government's takeover of the leading opposition television station and an independent radio channel. They plan protests later today in front of the television station, Studio B, which was run by the opposition-controlled Belgrade city council. A government statement said Studio B had broken the law by calling for an uprising against the Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milosevic. The station is now putting out government-controlled news. The radio channel B292 said it will now concentrate on getting information out through its Internet site. A BBC correspondent in Belgrade says the takeover of the two outlets has silenced almost all that's left of the non-government media in Serbia. One opposition leader, Zoran Djindjic, accused the authorities of planning a confrontation. The European security organisation, the OSCE, has criticised the closure of Studio B, which follows an opposition demonstration in Belgrade on Monday attended by about fifteen-thousand people.
