Serbian police seize independent TV station

The authorities in Serbia say they have taken control of the independent television station, Studio B, based in the capital, Belgrade.

Employees at the station said more than one hundred police raided their premises in the early hours of Wednesday, seizing control of studios and broadcasting equipment.

Two radio stations in the same building were also taken over.

A government statement said Studio B had broken the law by calling for an uprising against the Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milosevic.

Studio B is controlled by the Belgrade City Council which is dominated by opposition parties.

The BBC Belgrade correspondent says the raid is the latest move in a long-running campaign by the Serbian authorities against the independent media.
