Duma approves Kasyanov as new PM

The lower house of the Russian parliament, the Duma, has confirmed Mikhail Kasyanov as the country's new Prime Minister.

Mr Kasyanov, who was voted in by an overwhelming majority, told parliament that there should be no let-up in the pace of change.

The BBC Russian affairs analyst says Mr Kasyanov has established a favourable reputation in the West through his negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Our correspondent says the Russian government will now be hoping that Mr Kasyanov's appointment also sends a clear signal that Russia is serious about economic reform.
