Student dies in South Africa clashes

Police in South Africa say a university student has been shot dead during clashes between students and police in the city of Durban.

A police spokesman said the student was a twenty-three-year-old man from neighbouring Lesotho.

He said five students were injured during the fighting.

The South African news agency SAPA reported that the police were called to the campus of the University of Durban-Westville as youths began rioting over a decision to close the school in response to a boycott organised by the student council. The boycott was called last week to protest against a decision by the university authorities to expel hundreds of students who had failed to pay their registration fees.
