Motherwell's Pat Nevin will make a decision about his future at the club after the final league game of the season.

Nevin, who is chief executive at the club, has been freed as a player but has yet to make up his mind about a new job offer from chairman John Boyle.

The 36-year-old is keen to prolong his playing career but the prospect of doing that while remaining as chief executive at Motherwell has been ruled out

Pat Nevin: Faces decision
His position as chief executive at the club operates by way of a gentleman's agreement with John Boyle.

The former Chelsea, Everton and Tranmere winger had not planned to retire, and he now plans talks with John Boyle at the end of the season.

Two-year sabbatical

Nevin said: "I've not made a decision on this as yet. The most important thing is to get the final game of the season out of the way against Rangers on Sunday - after that I will think about things.

"I would not remain here and play for someone else because I don't think I could really have two clubs.

"I never expected to be a footballer. I did a two-year sabbatical at Chelsea from studying in Glasgow which turned into a career.

"I've never had to make a decision about my future before because I've always had nice offers."

'Tremendous career'

He said he would consider any opportunity arose to join another club as a player if circumstances were favourable.

Motherwell boss Billy Davies stressed his decision to make Nevin one of nine released players was based purely on footballing factors and that age was ultimately the main concern.

Davies said: "Pat has had a tremendous career, but this club has to move forward. We've got to get in younger guys who can get up and down the field.

"This season Pat has been the kind of player to come on and turn games. He's got us a few points in a few games this season.

"The decision was made on Pat Nevin the footballer, not Pat Nevin the chief executive."
