Barmby vows to shine
![]() Barmby will make most of England call-up
Nick Barmby promises to turn back the clock and show England he can be even better than he once was if he gets the chance to play for the national side again before Euro 2000.
Barmby was a surprise choice in England's 28-man England squad for the friendlies against Brazil, Ukraine and Malta but he has vowed to repay Kevin Keegan's faith.
He last played for his country against Moldova in 1997, though he said: "I think I am a different player now than when I was last in the England set-up.
"I'm more relaxed about my football and although there will be nerves this time, when you are younger you are more apprehensive. Now you just try to savour the moment and make sure you enjoy every minute. "I couldn't have come back into the England fold for a bigger game than Brazil in front of a full house at Wembley. But just to be involved in the squad again is a boost. "I'm looking forward to the training and joining up with England. I believe my recall is down to having a long run in the side whereas in the past two or three years with injury, loss of form and the change of managers it has not been easy for me. "People have been telling me that I might have a shout for England again and although I believe in my own ability, this has come as a shock. "I'm not really thinking any further ahead than the Brazil game. I intend having a great week training with England and world-class players." |
