![]() In the Cannes: Geri's new movie
Geri Halliwell is to play the leading role in a new British film, it has been confirmed.
The former Spice Girls singer will star in Therapy, which tells the tale of a woman who has an affair with her therapist. It will be her first film since making her big screen debut in Spice World: The Movie with her old group in 1997. Halliwell, 27, who is flying out to Cannes to meet distributors, is expected to make an official announcement at the film festival.
Her publicist Simon Jones told BBC News Online: "I can confirm that Geri will be appearing in a new film called Therapy. "It is being made by September Films and will be directed by David Green, who worked on Buster and Wings of Apache." He said the singer would play Amy, a girl who seeks help to deal with her turbulent love life, then discovers her therapist has fallen in love with her. Jones, who described Therapy as "a sort of romantic comedy", said the film was still in its development stage and no-one else had been cast. He added: "Geri, as you can imagine, is very excited by the role and will be in Cannes later this week meeting distributors."
Since splitting from the Spice Girls she has enjoyed a successful solo career, with three of her first four singles reaching number one in the UK charts. Other projects she has worked on include the World Walkabout series for the BBC, which also saw her team up with September Films as she visited different countries to meet extraordinary people. For the past two months, Halliwell has been in Los Angeles where she has been laying down tracks for her second album.
