Tension in Serbia as more arrested
There's continuing tension in Serbia, as opposition leaders prepare for further demonstrations after the violent anti-government protests overnight. A number of opposition activists have been detained for questioning. A BBC correspondent in Belgrade says riot police are waiting out of sight in case of further trouble. Police used tear gas in Belgrade yesterday in running battles with thousands of demonstrators, and there were also violent protests elsewhere. The protests began after the forced closure of opposition television and radio broadcasters earlier this week. Opposition newspapers in Belgrade are still being published; they sold out shortly after going on sale. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
