Residents urged to join clean up

Residents near a crime hot spot in Leicestershire have organised a day of action to reclaim the area.

Sandhurst Street in Oadby has been plagued with by vandals and a factory fire earlier this year prompted police to name it a "high priority zone".

But now a team of local volunteers have teamed up with the police and the borough council to turn it around.

Friday's "We Love Sandhurst Street Green" day will see areas cleaned, repainted and opened up for families.

Future plans

Local beat officer Andy Raybould, wanted lots of local people to get involved to help the area.

"This will not solve the problems in itself," he said.

"It is part of a process in line with policing and arrests and things of a more formal nature.

"But it is part of a process that hopefully will get the community involved and get them enjoying these spaces again and feeling part of a community again."

Organisers said if the day was a success it could be rolled out to other areas of the town.
