Picture Gallery: Mandela freedom anniversary

In South Africa, ceremonies have been taking place to mark the tenth anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison after more than a quarter of a century behind bars as punishment for his fight against apartheid.

Mandela unveils monument

Nelson Mandela unveils a plaque at Mvezo in Eastern Cape province, where he was born in 1918.



In a traditional Xhosa hat during a ceremony at his home town of Qunu.



Mr Mandela digs the first hole for the foundations of a youth and heritage centre at Qunu.

Dressed in one of his trademark colourful shirts in black, gold and cream, he shows no sign of slowing down.



Mr Mandela told the crowd at Mvezo: "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society."
