'Ladette' drinking culture condemned

Bar graphic The 'ladette' bar culture was condemned by a judge

A judge at Cardiff Crown Court has hit out at the new "ladette" culture of women drinking and fighting.

Judge Peter Jacobs spoke out as he sentenced a hairdresser for glassing another young woman in the face in a nightclub.

Judge Jacobs said: "Ten years ago it was men who were doing this sort of thing. It is depressing to see young women involved in alcohol-related violence in public."

The court heard Sarah James, 21, was in a nightclub brawl with the other woman when she hit with the glass.

The court heard James had drunk a "TVR" - a cocktail of tequila, vodka and the Red Bull energy drink.

Judge Jacobs said: "In the course of an evening's drinking you became involved in an argument with another young lady.

"In this unpleasant offence you appear to have been pushed a bit by the other woman and you brought up the glass and struck her to the head."

Her victim Natalie Richards, 23, fell to the floor after the attack.

The court heard she had three stitches to her forehead. James later told police she only meant to punch the Miss Richards - and did not realise she had the glass in her hand.

'Control drinking'

Peter Davies, defending, said: "Sarah did not instigate the situation.

"She needs to be persuaded to take control of her drinking."

Hairdresser James, of Dunraven Street, Aberkenfig, Bridgend, admitted wounding.

Judge Jacobs ordered her to pay £260 compensation to Miss Richards.

She was also sentenced to two years probation on condition she undergoes alcohol and drug education treatment.
