Group to fight torture in Kenya

A group of human rights workers in Kenya has launched a campaign to help victims of torture to seek justice in the courts.

The group, which brings together doctors, lawyers and two human rights organisations the Kenya Human Rights Commission and People against Torture, asserts that torture is widespread in Kenyan jails and police stations.

The activists said they hoped to pursue ten cases in the courts over the next year, from among the eight-hundred cases they have on their books.

They welcomed a letter from the Kenyan Attorney-General, Amos Wako, stating that the government did not condone torture.

But the human rights workers said there was little evidence that the authorities were intent on eradicating it.
