Two held on anti-terror laws

Irish police stopped van near border Irish police stopped van near border

Irish police are continuing to question two men arrested when their van was stopped near the village of Burnfoot on Wednesday.

The two men, who are believed to be from Londonderry, are being held under anti-terrorist legislation.

Their van, which was travelling towards Londonderry, was stopped near Burnfoot close to the border with Northern Ireland.

They stopped about 100 yards short of a police checkpoint before turning off onto a side road.

After being pursued by the police, one of the men was arrested.

The other man ran off but was later detained. They were arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the State act.

The two are being questioned on suspicion of being members of an unlawful organisation.

The van was taken to Letterkenny for examination by technical experts.
