Lebanese and Israelis meet despite tension

Lebanese and Israeli officials are meeting today to discuss the latest escalation of tension between the two countries.

The meeting comes at the end of a week in which Israeli planes struck power stations in Lebanon in retaliation for attacks by Hezbollah guerrillas which killed six Israeli soldiers.

More than twenty Lebanese civilians were injured in the Israeli attacks.

The meeting in southern Lebanon takes place under the supervision of an an international monitoring group which was established in 1996 with the aim of defusing tension between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas and protecting civilians.
