Ian Hislop is the editor of satirical magazine Private Eye, but is probably better known for his appearances on the BBC2 television series Have I Got News For You? Since 1996 he has had a column in the Sunday Telegraph and has also written scripts for television programmes, including Spitting Image and Harry Enfield. Ian Hislop was educated in Nigeria, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia until the age of eight, as his father was a civil engineer working abroad. Mr Hislop was then sent to boarding school in Sussex. He has an English degree from Oxford University where he edited a satirical student magazine called Passing Wind. He interviewed the then Private Eye editor Richard Ingrams, who encouraged him to write for him. Ian Hislop joined Private Eye in 1981, was promoted to deputy editor within four years and became editor in 1986. He has also written columns for The Listener and was a television critic for The Spectator. He has also presented serious TV programmes for Channel 4 including Canterbury Tales, about the Church of England in the twentieth century, and School Rules.
