Factory worker's lucky find

Houses of Parliament Mr Brannan had been protesting at the Houses of Parliament

A Glasgow factory employee fighting to save workers' jobs may be about to land a £5,000 cash windfall.

Phil Brannan found £5,310 in a holdall after attending a protest in London against factory closures.

He handed the money to police, who will return the money to him if no-one steps forward to claim the cash.

Mr Brannan, who works at the Remploy factory in Springburn, had gone to the Houses of Parliament to protest against up to nine planned closures by the company.

He found the cash, which was in £10s, £20s and £50s wrapped up inside a bag with no identification or explanation.

Remploy, which is the UK's largest employer of disabled people, is undergoing a radical restructuring.

The company says the closures are essential in order to provide for its expansion.

Mr Brannan, who is a member of the GMB union, has said he will give the money to the fund being collected to help fight the closures.

Fighting fund

Phil Davies, GMB national secretary, said: "This just goes to show yet again the calibre of the Remploy workers.

"The honesty and feeling of civic responsibility towards the society that may allow their jobs to be thrown away shines through.

"I hope the money is not claimed and that the Remploy workers' fighting fund benefits from this find."

A spokesman for Remploy has stressed that there would be no job losses resulting from the restructuring.
