On the benches
Simon Thomas, who was elected Plaid Cymru MP for Ceredigion on 3 February, reviews the week in politics for BBC News Online.
The highpoint of this week was prime minister's question time and the news that the first secretary, Alun Michael, back in the national assembly had resigned and the surprise that the prime minister hadn't heard about it. It was my first question time so it was a good one to start with. Monday was the first time I had been in the House and two days later there was this huge story breaking on one of the wobbliest days for the government. We'd been saying all along there had been a block to progress and unfortunately, something like that has to change to allow things to open up and we hope Rhodri Morgan will put together a programme of action that people in the assembly can get behind.
My personal low point was being barracked when I was taking the oath. I took the oath in both Welsh and English, allowed obviously by the conventions of the House, and while I was doing it in Welsh, I was barracked by a Tory member who didn't like the fact I was speaking a language he didn't understand. It was a low point, not from a personal point of view, it didn't make much difference, but from the point of view that the standard of behaviour was so low. Many people in my constituency, people who I talked to during the by-election said the House of Commons was a very boorish place and, unfortunately, my first taste of it was very boorish. My constituency is 60% Welsh speakers and they wouldn't have been pleased with that behaviour.
Just from the point of view from what I hear, it's been a very busy week and I haven't had time to hear every debate and every contribution, but I was particularly impressed by Seamus Mallon and his contribution to the Northern Ireland bill. I thought he made a very measured and serious contribution to it. Plaid Cymru is obviously outside the hot house of Northern Ireland politics. We do take a great deal of account of what the SDLP said, although not to the exclusion of other views. On this occasion having heard Seamus we did go into the lobby with the SDLP and some of the Labour members as well. We pretty much feel the GFA needs time to run and it's a rather artificial timetable which has been put on it for other political reasons.
I'm afraid that would have to be a fellow MP for Wales, Alun Michael. He hasn't confirmed which way he is going to jump yet. I would imagine the events this week would put him in a situation where perhaps he's reconsidering now whether he's going to come back to Parliament rather than staying in the assembly. If he does that then it will only confirm the suspicion in many people's minds that he only came on the prime minister's instigation anyway.
I've been there every day. I've almost got used to walking in there now. It was a great shock when I first walked in. I was only just in time to swear in the oath, just when the speaker was calling new members forward. It was quite a shock to arrive in the chamber and next thing be taking the oath.
The things that seem to be coming through are issues to do with post offices and general benefit problems and also congratulations.
I hope to be making my maiden speech on the Postal Services Bill on Tuesday. I'm sure it won't be an unpleasant moment but I'm wracking my brains about what to say and not making a fool of myself. I'm also looking forwards to my first opportunity to ask questions. |
