Rwanda resumes cooperation with tribunal

Rwanda has announced it will resume cooperation with the International War Crimes Tribunal after a break of three months.

Relations were suspended with the tribunal in Tanzania after a top genocide suspect Jean-Bosco Barayagwiza was released on procedural grounds.

The decision enraged Rwandan authorities who wanted the man to be tried for involvement in the genocide in 1994.

The United Nations' Chief Prosecutor, Carla del Ponte, backed Rwandan efforts to get the court to review its ruling.

Speaking after a meeting with Mrs del Ponte in the capital, Kigali, the Rwandan vice-president, Paul Kagame, said cooperation with the tribunal was better than confrontation.
