Suharto fails to appear for interrogation

The former Indonesian president, Suharto, has failed to appear at an inquiry into alleged corruption at charitable foundations set up when he was in power.

His lawyers said the former president was too ill to testify.

The Indonesian Attorney-General Marzuki Darusman reopened the investigation last week as, he said, circumstances immediately after Mr Suharto's resignation in 1998 prevented action being taken at the time.

State prosecutors say they have uncovered new evidence that Mr Suharto abused power to enrich his family.

He has strongly denied all allegations of corruption.
