Close Duvalier associate dies

One of Haiti's most feared military figures, General Claude Raymond, has died in hospital in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

He had been suffering for many years from kidney trouble and diabetes, but the exact cause of death was not disclosed.

General Raymond served as minister of the interior and defence under Jean-Claude Duvalier, who with his father, Papa Doc, ruled Haiti for three decades.

He had been in prison for more than three years in connection with a massacre of voters on election day in 1987.
