Alloa kick out Kilmarnock

Meldrum: Stranded by a perfectly lofted shot

Alloa 1-0 Kilmarnock

Second division Alloa produced a second Scottish Cup shock in two days with a stunning win over Premier League stragglers Kilmarnock.

Martin Cameron's strike in the fifth minute was all that separated two sides that are a gulf apart on paper.

Before the game I have to admit I was not too optimistic
Terry Christie, Alloa manager
Alloa boss Terry Christie saluted his players' efforts, but admitted Kilmarnock had been unlucky.

"That was another great effort by our boys tonight," he said.

"They all played their hearts out. Before the game I have to admit I was not too optimistic because we had a hard game against Killie at Rugby Park on Saturday.

"Our goalkeeper Mark Cairns was definitely the man-of-the-game, and captain Craig Valentine was also outstanding."

McPherson McPherson wasted Killie's first chance
Killie manager Bobby Williamson said he felt the Alloa goal was offside, adding that his side would have to pick itself up and keep fighting in the league.

"What we need is someone who can put the ball in the back of the net, and if that happens I can see it turning us round very quickly," he said.

Alloa now face Dundee United in the fourth round.

The match was barely underway when former Celtic striker Andy Walker locked onto Cameron, who gathered the ball and lofted it perfectly over Killie keeper Colin Meldrum for his 18th goal of the season.

Kilmarnock pressed hard all game, but a combination of hard luck and basic ineptitude kept them out as the Wasps replicated Inverness Caledonian Thistle's demolition of mighty Celtic the night before.

Gus McPherson went close for Kilmarnock in the first half, but scuffed what looked to be a certain score, while Andy Smith's feeble strike wasted another of the visitors' cast iron opportunities.

As Christie said, Alloa keeper Cairns was outstanding throughout and was only beaten once when a Fred Dindeleux header was kept out by the post.
