Davies receives Welsh call

Simon Davies during a reserve outing for Spurs

Spurs' new midfielder Simon Davies has been called in to the Wales' senior squad for February's friendly against Qatar in Doha.

The £800,000 recruit from Peterborough is a regular in the Welsh under-21 squad but has been handed a promotion by national manager Mark Hughes.

"Simon is an exciting player and this trip gives me the chance to have a good look at him," said the Southampton player now in charge of the national squad.

"He certainly did well at Peterborough, and now he has the opportunity to show what he can do, not only at Premiership level with Spurs, but also with Wales."

Leeds United youngster Matthew Jones, who won his first full cap at the end of last season against Switzerland in Wales last match, is also included in the squad.

Aston Villa's young wing-back Mark Delaney is also retained alongside more established names such as Manchester United's Ryan Giggs and Newcastle's Gary Speed.

But Hughes has agreed to leave out Leicester's Robbie Savage because the midfielder will be playing in the Worthington Cup final at Wembley against Tranmere the Sunday after the trip to Qatar.
