Pre-election violence in Manipur There's been further violence in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur ahead of this month's legislative assembly elections. Separatist rebels threw a grenade at the chief minister's residence in the Manipur capital, Imphal but police say no-one was hurt. In another incident, a group of drunken soldiers in the town of Moreh on the border with Burma fired at police bodyguards of a former speaker of the Indian parliament, Purno Sangma, injuring two guards. Mr Sangma is campaigning for his Nationalist Congress party. Meanwhile, three separatist groups have called for a boycott of the elections. So far, one candidate in Manipur's assembly constituency of Tipaimukh has been killed. The rebels say Manipur was forcibly incorporated into India fifty years ago.
