USA GP guide
![]() Round 15: 24 Sept Watkins Glen, Long Beach, Detroit, Dallas and Pheonix. There is nothing new about a Grand Prix in the United States with all five of these venues having hosted events. At one stage there were even two races on the calendar - one for each coast of the US.
But none of these captured the American public's imagination in the manner of their own IndyCar and Nascar series.
So it is a brave move by Formula One to head straight to the the place which gave America the phrase IndyCar. But it is hard to see any other venue getting the sort of publicity that Formula One wishes to see from its return.
The famous Indianapolis 500 race in the spring uses a simple oval with four fast turns around what could be labelled, perhaps unfairly, as a giant two-and-a-half mile roundabout.
This would not have suited F1 which has always demanded a little more variety in its circuits. The solution is to have the cars travelling in the opposite direction around two corners of the oval before turning inside onto a modern F1 track in the infield. It is a measure of the vastness of this giant bowl that there is space for a Grand Prix track as well as a golf course inside the oval. An estimated $15m has been spent on the 12 new corners and a new pit area - the first serious alteration at the circuit since 1909. |
