India: Jayalalitha jail term suspended A jail sentence given to a former chief minister of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has been suspended while she launches an appeal against her conviction. Last week, Jayalalitha was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to one-year in prison. Her case will be heard by the state's High Court and legal experts say it is routine for jail sentences to be suspended during an appeal. Rioting broke out after her conviction. During the violence, three girls died when a bus was set on fire. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
