Vietnam reduces reforestation target

The government in Vietnam says it may reduce its tree planting target for the next decade because of a shortage of land available for reforestation.

Last year the government launched a programme which aimed to plant five million hectares of forest by the year two-thousand-and-ten.

But the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development says that target may be reduced to about three million hectares.

Reforestation and poverty reduction in forested areas are prime targets for development in Vietnam.

It's lost millions of hectares of forest because of war, over-exploitation and clearing for agriculture. The government's programme for forest development targets includes local planting work and educating households about the care and use of forests.
