Scots spare Logan
Kenny Logan has been reprieved by the Scotland selectors in the wake of his poor kicking display in the shock Six Nations Championship defeat by Italy. The Wasps winger has kept his place in a 23-strong squad to face Ireland in Dublin a week on Saturday.
The only change to the squad is the introduction of
Graham Shiel and George Graham as cover for injured duo, skipper John
Leslie and prop David Hilton.
Last week's stand-by man Alan Bulloch slips down to the A team for some action at Donnybrook. Scotland are aiming to resurrect their Six Nations campaign after being trounced 34-20 by unfancied newcomers Italy. With Warren Gatland's men having been similarly deflated by a rampant England side, the February 19 clash at Lansdowne Road is already developing into a battle to avoid the wooden spoon. Scotland coach Ian McGeechan blamed Logan's poor kicking for the defeat but he has retained his place. However it remians to be seen whether Gregor Townsend takes over the kicking duties, as he did in Rome The Scots were poor in many areas and once they had lost Leslie after 14 minutes and would have expected to have enough in attack for the match not to descend to a battle of the boot, won by Diego Dominguez with a record 29 points. McGeechan has kept faith with the side hoping they will be able to reproduce the fantastic rugby they played en route to the title last season rather than the miserable display of last Saturday. "We have got a week to sort things out. We are looking for a far better performance individually and collectively," he said. "You don't just discard players on the evidence of one game. "There is an element of giving people the chance to put things right. "There are some good players in there as we have always said and we were desperately disappointed at what happened in Rome. "We let ourselves down - we let a lot of people down and the guys should have the opportunity to put that right." Leslie hopes to recover from his hip injury in time to face Ireland but could lack match fitness unless he is fit enough to play for his club side Newcastle this weekend. Scotland Squad: Backs: D Hodge (Edinburgh), J Leslie (Newcastle capt), K Logan (Wasps), S Longstaff (Glasgow), J Mayer ( Bristol), J McLaren (Bourgoin), G Metcalfe (Glasgow), A Nicol (Glasgow), G Shiel (Edinburgh), G Townsend (Brive). Forwards: G Bulloch (Glasgow), G Graham (Newcastle), S Grimes (Newcastle), D Hilton (Glasgow), M Leslie (Edinburgh), S Murray (Saracens), S Reid (Narbonne), R Russell (Saracens), G Simpson (Glasgow), T Smith (Brive), M Stewart (Northampton), B Pountney (Northampton), D Weir (Newcastle). |
