Austrian Chancellor presents government programme

The new Austrian Chancellor, Wolfgang Schuessel, has rejected international concern over the inclusion of the far right in his government, saying it was exaggerated and unjustified.

Outlining his programme to parliament, Mr Schuessel said his administration believed in tolerance and democratic values.

He also spoke of his government's commitment to the European Union although the other fourteen members countries have been leading moves to isolate Austria because the cabinet includes the far right Freedom Party.

Other policies outlined by Mr Schuessel included tackling illegal immigration -- a priority of the Freedom Party.

As parliament met, riot police guarded the building following recent anti-government protests.
