Diplomats try to end Lebanon fighting

INCORPORATES 2200 LEBANON TARGETS Diplomatic pressure is being applied to try to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

Israel has been attacking civilian targets, including Lebanese power stations, in retaliation for the killing by Hezbollah in the past two weeks of six Israeli troops operating inside Lebanon.

France, Syria and the United States are seeking an urgent meeting of monitoring group set up four years ago to try to avoid civilian casualties in Lebanon.

And the American Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, has urged Syria to use its influence to persuade Hezbollah to end its attacks.

Despite the appeals for restraint, Israeli aircraft were again in action in Lebanon today following attacks last night on Hezbollah targets in and around the city of Tyre.
