Struck-off doctor appeal adjourned

Dr Emmanuel Nwabueze Dr Emmanuel Nwabueze has appealed to the Privy Council

An appeal by a north Wales GP who was struck off for having an improper sexual relationship with a patient has been adjourned.

Prestatyn GP Dr Emmanuel Nwabueze is taking his case to the Privy Council after the General Medical Council struck him off in April last year.

The hearing heard Nigerian-born Dr Nwabueze had "flagrantly abused" his position of trust in conducting an affair with a woman he was treating for depression at the Bryntirion Surgery, known as Mrs D.

Dr Nwabueze denied the allegations and claimed the married woman had stalked him for months.

But the GMC's Professional Conduct Committee ruled the woman had been in a vulnerable position.

Behaved inappropriately

Committee Chairman Dr Jeremy Lee-Potter said Dr Nwabueze had also abused his professional position by behaving inappropriately to a Mrs C, who was also a patient and towards a policeman's wife and mother-of-three Mrs E.

Further, he had been guilty of deliberate dishonesty and his behaviour had fallen far short of that expected of a registered GP.

Pending the appeal outcome, Dr Nwabueze was told at the time of the hearing he could continue to practise as a doctor at his Prestatyn surgery.

Dr Nwabueze's former partner, Dr Anne MacLeod, was angered with the decision.

She said the doctor should have been suspended until the appeal.
