Spurs target Hasselbaink

Hasselbaink is the Primera Liga's top scorer

Tottenham are lining up a £6m move for Atletico Madrid striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, according to newspaper reports.

Spurs boss George Graham told Tuesday's Evening Standard: "I know all about Jimmy, about his strengths and what he can do.

"If he is available then he is the type of player we should be looking to bring to Tottenham."

Hasselbaink is both Atletico's and the Spanish Primera Liga's top scorer, with 20 goals this season, but the Madrid club may consider selling him to alleviate large debts.

Spurs are on the hunt for a new striker following an injury to Norwegian star Steffen Iversen that could leave him sidelined for up to six weeks.

Graham already has a history with Hasselbaink. As manager of Leeds, he bought the Dutchman from Portugal's Boavista for £2m.

The player was eventually sold to Atletico Madrid for £12m after Leeds refused his demands for more money.

Atletico could let Hasselbaink go for half the sum they paid for him, although his personal terms would probably come into conflict with Tottenham chairman Sir Alan Sugar's strict wage structure.

Meanwhile, Iversen confirmed the north Londoners' deepening crisis up front.

"I'm definitely out of our match at Leeds on Saturday," he said.

"I can't even put any weight on the foot yet. We'll just have to wait and see how it progresses."

A Spurs spokesman said that no date had been put on the player's return.
