Possible broadcasting changes in India

The Indian Information and Broadcasting Minister, Arun Jaitley, has indicated that the government may give the right to FM channels to broadcast news and current affairs programmes.

He didn't say when this might start.

The government has already decided to open FM channels to the private sector in forty cities.

Talking to the BBC Hindi sevice, the Minister said a committee has been set up to look into reorganising the Prasar Bharati, a corporation intended to give autonomy to state-run radio and television.
