Call for more Mitch aid The president of Honduras, Carlos Flores, has called on donors to speed up aid to the Central American countries devastated by Hurricane Mitch fifteen months ago. Addresssing a meeting in Honduras of representatives of credit organisations and donor countries, President Flores said the international community had a duty to fulfil its pledges. At a conference held in Sweden in May, Central American nations were promised nine-billion dollars to help reconstruction efforts. Several thousand people were killed in the storms, and tens of thousands are still living in temporary shelters. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
