The president of Honduras, Carlos Flores, has called on donors to speed up aid to the Central American countries devastated by Hurricane Mitch fifteen months ago.

Addresssing a meeting in Honduras of representatives of credit organisations and donor countries, President Flores said the international community had a duty to fulfil its pledges.

At a conference held in Sweden in May, Central American nations were promised nine-billion dollars to help reconstruction efforts.

Several thousand people were killed in the storms, and tens of thousands are still living in temporary shelters.
