Electricity supplies being restored
Northern Ireland Electricity has said that supplies have now been restored to nearly all homes affected by a power cut in County Fermanagh. Some 50 homes close to the Derrygonnelly village were without electricity on Tuesday before power was restored. At one stage the strong winds on Monday night affected supplies to nearly 2000 customers in various parts of Northern Ireland. By midnight about 300 customers in Larne and Templepatrick in County Antrim as well as Omagh and Coagh in County Tyrone were left without electricity. Refurbishment programme But on Tuesday NIE spokesman Robin Greer said the company had carried out one of the most "expensive and aggressive" refurbishment programmes anywhere in the UK. He said this included an extensive tree pruning programme. This programme and an extensive media campaign came in the wake of extensive criticism of the company's handling of severe storms over the Christmas period in 1997 and 1998. |
