No school for Romanian teachers

School teachers in Romania have resumed their general strike, after suspending it for a week during the school holidays.

The teachers, who are striking for higher pay, want the government to allocate four percent of Romania's gross domestic product to education.

They say this would enable the education ministry to meet their demands.

A meeting had been arranged between the two sides but the ministry said later that there was no point in holding discussions before the government's budget for the year had been approved. Reports say Romanian university teachers plan to resume their own strike over pay at the end of this month.
