Hungarian unions urge PM to intervene

The Hungarian trade union association has urged the Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, to intervene personally to help end the country's longest post-war railway strike.

A senior trade union official said it was unacceptable for the state-run railway company to try to dictate terms when the government claimed it was negotiating.

The train drivers went on strike eleven days ago after rejecting a pay rise of eight and a half percent.

The action has caused major disruptions to passenger and goods trains.
