Djibouti accord signed A peace accord has been signed to end the nine-year conflict in the tiny state of Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa. The deal was signed by representatives of the Djibouti government and a radical opposition group at a hotel in Paris. The rebel group represents the radical wing of the Front for the Restoration for Unity and Democracy FRUD. It has continued its struggle against the government despite the main faction agreeing to a power-sharing deal in 1993. Today's accord calls for the immediate release of all prisoners by both sides. Djibouti, a former French colony with a population of six-hundred thousand, has two main clans, Issas and Afars. The rebels are mainly Afars. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
