British team in Japan nuclear talks

A British delegation is in Tokyo to try to overturn a Japanese ban on reprocessed nuclear fuel from Britain.

Anti-nuclear protestors shouted at the British team as they went in for talks with their Japanese counterparts.

Japan suspended the use of British fuel after it emerged that engineers at the nuclear plant at Sellafield had falsified safety data.

Japan wants to send back a batch of reprocessed fuel in addition to banning any further shipments.

Correspondents say the Japanese public has reason to be sceptical about nuclear safety after an accident at one of the country's own nuclear plants in September that killed one worker and exposed hundreds to radioactive fallout.
