Two goals from teenager Julius Aghahowa proved too much for outsiders Senegal in the last African Cup of Nations quarter-final in Lagos.

Senegal successfully defended an early goal from Kalilou Fadiga until the Tunisia-based teenager struck from close range with six minutes left of normal time at Surulere Stadium.

Aghahowa sparked a pitch invasion from home supporters that took 12 minutes to clear when he scored again just 90 seconds into additional time after sloppy defending from the tiring visitors.

Nigeria finished with 10 men when midfielder Augustine 'Jay Jay' Okocha was sent off with two minutes of extra time left for elbowing substitute Mbaye Badji and is automatically suspended for one match.

A Senegalese side without even one big-name player snatched a shock lead in their first serious attack when unmarked Fadiga controlled a cross with his chest before slamming a low shot past Ike Shorunmu.

The goal inspired the Senegalese Lions, who repeatedly spread panic in the Super Eagles defence through fast, direct running from midfield and Henri Camara spurned several half-chances.

Senegal captain Papa Diop of French club Strasbourg was a tower of strength at the heart of the defence as Nigeria pushed forward continuously in the second half and Okocha twice went close.

Benedict Akwuegbu, who had made little impression, fired wide with only the goalkeeper to beat from 10 metres and soon made way for ex-African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Amunike.

The pressure from Nigeria was constant without any reward and Bonfrere cut a lonely figure on the sideline while assistant coach Stephen Keshi repeatedly checked his watch.

Camara fired straight at Shorunmu in a rare attack and it proved a costly miss as Nigeria were level within 60 seconds when Aghahowa chased a long ball and slammed the ball past Diallo from close range.

Extra time was less than two minutes old when Nigeria went ahead through another goal from Aghahowa, who wrongfooted Diallo after a cross before tapping the ball into the net.

The goal sparked an invasion of the pitch by fans mistakenly believing the game would be decided by a 'golden goal' and it took mounted police some time to restore order.
