Naga separatists poll threat

Tribal separatists in north-east India have threatened to take steps to stop people voting in this month's local elections in Manipur.

The separatists, from the outlawed National Socialist Council of Nagaland, say they will impose what they describe as collective fines on villages in Naga-inhabited areas if they allow polling to go ahead.

A spokesman said the elections added a complication to the talks taking place between his organisation and the Indian government.

The separatists want the state of Nagaland and parts of Manipur to secede from India.
