Communist gunmen kill Philippine mayor

Communist gunmen in the Philippines have shot dead a town mayor in Mindoro province as he was leaving church.

Witnesses said the gunmen, who identified themselves as members of the New People's Army, calmly walked away after the shooting.

The mayor Oscar Aldaba was a former army intelligence officer who has been accused by guerillas of helping counter-insurgency campaigns. The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, whose leaders broke off peace talks with Manila last May.
